This Is Why You Need to Protest Your Taxes

How to protest your property tax appraisal and its advantages.

By now, most homeowners, if not all, should have already received the notice of their appraised property tax value. If you think your tax value appraisal is too high, don’t worry because you have the right to protest it. On the other hand, if you think your property’s appraised tax value is comfortably low, you should still protest it. Failing to file a protest before the deadline could lead to those values fluctuating, and you might regret it later. So, today, I will share with you what you’ll gain from protesting and how to go about it:

Regardless of how low you think your property’s appraised tax value is, protesting it is still crucial. In fact, protesting will lead to a decrease in your tax appraisal, no matter how small the difference is. When you file a protest, your tax value appraisal will be reduced even just a little. Reductions, no matter how small, still make a difference.

“Failing to protest will likely lead to the potential tax value increase on your property.”

Even if you’re not interested in reducing your property’s appraised tax value, failing to protest will likely lead to the potential tax value increase on your property, especially if your neighbor protested their tax appraisal and you didn’t. So, to prevent being on the losing end, homeowners should make the effort to fight their property taxes.

Now, it’s important to make sure that you file the protest before the deadline. Most notices specify the deadline to be on May 15, 2024, but it’s best to check your notice to double check if the deadline is the same. You can file a protest by yourself at your local appraisal district, although it can be time consuming and quite a bit of a hassle, especially if you have other priorities to attend to. So, if you don’t have enough time to do it yourself, it’s best to hire a professional like myself to help you out. What’s important is that your protest is filed every year.
